A Series of drawings titled “ The Opposite of Shame” — 2019

Born in Los Angeles in 1998, Syas creates narratives in her art that compel her audience to unravel its contents in search of an important message.

Her work is reminiscent of the Pop Art movement, showing bold funky colors in both foreground and background. She has a gift for painting an array of warm and cool tones together in an appealing fashion. Her painterly style surrounding her portraitures shows her subjects stuck in a moment. Hidden in the lines and colors are pockets of emotion, feeling, and connection.

Looking at her work, positive themes and intimate stories seem to entangle every piece — but there are much deeper concepts present than meets the eye.

Syas is a soft-spoken girl with a glowing intensity at first glance, but like her art, there is much more to her underneath the surface. Her work is not just a relationship with the subject, but one with the audience. With every stroke is the intimacy of connection that she paints with the viewer. There is a story that she wants to tell; a vision she wants to share. Each portrait she creates is an invitation into an intimate part of her life.

This 2019 acrylic work titled “Sisters Bound” is a 2x3 ft self-portrait. It narrates the connection she shares with her sister through the exploration of touch and color.

A soft glow seems to radiate off the canvas to reveal a story of affection, acceptance, and reciprocity. Her work urges you to take part in its playfulness and positivity, while also revealing tension and vulnerability. The hyperrealistic brick background carries a message etched into the wall — bound
